Two weeks ago we’ve made a city trip to London. It was a self-made city trip: we organised it all by ourselves. That is a great way to spare some money – leaving out all the uninteresting things. This way of travelling also makes it possible to plan it all efficiently. Bound to a tight schedule, it was very hard “working” the full three days. We came back tired but fully satisfied – looking back on a great period. And…wanting more! London is such a great city. There must be more to see. And there are also much more places we want to go to. Thanks to my mother, who looked after our dogs, and made it possible (thanks mam)!
Impressions of London.
London had a big WOW factor to us. It was our first trip together outside The Netherlands. We both never flew in an aeroplane before. I guess that helped to make it special. But besides the journey, the city of London made a great impression to us. More than 7 million people living there, in such different areas. The character of London – made of many agglomerated villages – can be observed on so many places. We stayed in an old Victorian house in de Bayswater area – between Paddington Station and the Hyde Park. (If you like a great cheap hostel on a superb location visit http://www.royalcourtapartments.co.uk/, we can recommend it!)
All “must see” famous places like Buckingham Palace, London Eye, Harrods, The Hyde Park and so on, can be reached by foot. London underground station Lancaster Gate is just a 2-minute walk from the hostel.
London came to us as a busy city. Friendly people (I hope that was not because of the selling potential as a tourist!). Great subway about which I will write in another post. Pollution due to heavy traffic (why don’t more people use the tube?). Great historical buildings!
We visited the following:
Tower Bridge (including exhibition), Buckingham palace (both changing the guards and State Rooms exhibition), Harrods warehouse, Oxford Street (great shopping area), London Eye, British Museum, Natural History Museum, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, Green Park, Downingstreet, Big Ben, Houses of Parliament.
In my next posts I’ll write about this, so – to be continued!
